Caripe and the cave of Guacharos
Few hours in different cars and we are in Caripe. This is a small town in hilly area of Venezuela, where all the tourists go to see the longest cave in Venezuela, full of strange creatures - oil birds or “guacharos”.
It’s almost impossible to take a picture of guacharo, cause they are living in the dark and you can’t bother them using flash. Only one legal source of light in this cave is the special lamp in guide hands. Flash is allowed only in second part of cave, where birds don’t live.
That’s why half of the road you have to follow this light in spooky area, feeling, how these birds are flying and making noise just above you. Big white mousy, crabs, scary shadows on the walls and caw of oil birds make this place unforgettable.
If you are brave enough, you can ask for guides about the possibility to tent here. If they agree, you will have a unique chance to see, how in the evening thousands of guacharos are flying out of this cave to get some fruits to eat. They are coming back to cave early morning, just before sunrise, therefore you will have really interesting night.
